Former Bank Employee Found Guilty for Exploiting His Position to Commit Bank Fraud – Fraud Friday

The jury took less than 90 minutes to decide to convict Jalen Craig McMillan for using his position at a federal credit union to carry out a fraud scheme. Now he faces up to 30 years in federal prison for his crimes.

As a “Member Service Representative” at an unnamed bank, Jalen opened accounts in the names of identity theft victims, made financial transactions, and assisted with loans. Along with his co-defendant and co-conspirators, they obtained and used fictitious identities and the personal identifying information of victims. The victim’s information was used to create false identification documents with photos of other people. From there, the co-defendants would impersonate victims. With the help of Jalen, they were able to open bank accounts and make financial transactions under the victims’ names, including substantial withdrawals from the accounts.

Additionally, Jalen was convicted of aggravated identity theft for providing a bank customer’s identifying information to a co-defendant with the knowledge that it would be used for the fraud scheme. It was proven that he used his access to the bank’s customer database to steal confidential information. The co-defendant used this customer’s information to open an account. After, Jalen serviced the transaction and helped the co-conspirator obtain a $10,000 loan which was immediately withdrawn in case.

In total, Jalen and the conspirators attempted to obtain over $400,000 from the bank, and they managed to defraud the bank of over $150,000.

He was found guilty of conspiracy to commit bank fraud, bank fraud, and aggravated identity theft. His co-defendants pled guilty to their roles earlier and are awaiting sentencing:

  • Paul Archie
  • John Fitzgerald Washington
  • Tiffany Rainel Williams
